No7: Beautifully Matte vs Stay Perfect

So, if you read my review of the Estee Lauder Double Wear foundation (click here to read) you will know that I am very much a foundation girl. For some girls, its all about the lashes or the nails, but I am obsessed with achieving a flawless base and am constantly on the hunt for the perfect foundation for me. Double Wear is one of my two favourite foundations and one of two that I will repurchase again and again. Today, I'd like to introduce you to the other!

First off the bat, I must say that for me, the 'perfect' foundation will mean high coverage and excellent staying power.

I think No7's adverts are really clever and the way they promoted their colour matching service must have pulled in a lot of customers for them. That's certainly how they got me! I often have a hard time finding the perfect foundation shade, since I am so pale, yet have beige undertones rather than pink. So off I went to my local Boots for a colour matching session. The lovely lady there told me that I needed the shade 'calico' and she was definitely right. This shade is a very light, creamy beige colour which keeps me looking close to my natural skin colour, yet doesn't wash me out.

I had initially gone in to buy the 'Stay Perfect' foundation; this was the one that was currently being advertised everywhere. While I was there, I asked which of their foundations provides the fullest coverage, and the No7 lady introduced me to 'Beautifully Matte.' I decided to buy both so I could compare.

Price and Value for Money
The Stay Perfect Foundation is £1 dearer than Beautifully Matte (£13.50), at £14.50 for 30ml. Both are SPF 15 and come in similar packaging, as shown below. Both come in a frosted effect tube; Stay Perfect comes in a glass tube and Beautifully Matte in plastic. The Stay Perfect has a traditional pump applicator. The pump can easily be removed to get out the last of the product, however, since it's a glass bottle, there will always be that last bit of unreachable product! However, the Beautifully Matte foundation features a pump that moves up as you use the product, so there is never a drop wasted!

The Stay Perfect foundation looks and feels more expensive in its container, but the Beautifully Matte tube is definitely more practical.

Coverage and Finish
Neither make any reference to the coverage on the packaging, but here is what they do say:

SP: 'Life-proof foundation for a natural, flawless complexion with super staying power. This comfortable foundation feels lightweight and breathable and gives an even-toned, beautifully smooth complexion that looks and feels fresh all day long. It can be relied upon to stay perfect; weather-proof and transfer-proof, it won't cake or flake on dry skin, nor slide or shine on oily skin. Up to 24 hours wear'

BM: 'For an all day shine free look with a soft, even finish. Up to 14 hours shine free complexion.'

Stay Perfect provides medium coverage, whereas I would say Beautifully Matte provides full coverage.

Staying Power
The packaging of SP makes a hell of a lot of promises, which is perhaps why I found it so disappointing after using it a few times. I have normal/combo skin, and this foundation did anything but 'stay perfect' on me! After roughly four hours wear, it looks patchy and uneven. The packaging states that it is 'transfer-proof,' but this sits on the surface of my skin looking oily and gloopy and gets on everything it touches. I'm really unimpressed with this foundation.

However, BM really does last all day. Consistency wise, it is a little thicker and needs a lot more blending. It is far more buildable though. It still transfers a little, but nowhere near as much as SP. I carry a foundation brush with me when I wear this product, because it needs a touch up at least once during the day. It can go a little dry around the mouth and give you a lovely mustache effect if you apply it too thickly in this area. I would recommend moisturising before wear.

Overall, I would give Stay Perfect Foundation 4/10 and Beautifully Matte foundation 9/10. Beautifully Matte is perfect for me, and alongside Double Wear, is one that I will go back to time and time again!

Does anyone else wear No7 foundations? What do you think of them? If you have any other recommendations of full coverage foundations, let me know!

  1. agreed! Stay Perfect was the one I went for a few months ago. I was matched to the sahde Warm Ivory and all was well in my first try, but as I used it more and more, the product started oxidizing so much and I can totally related to it looking patchy and weird after a few hours. I'm glad I am not the only one! I have given this away and will not repurchase. I might need to try the matte one though, sounds heavenly!
