Why I Got Into Blogging and What Took Me So Long!

Bit of a different post today. Unfortunately, not a very original one, but everybody has a different take on things, right? Today I’ll be talking about how and why I got into blogging, and what took me so long!

I wanted to blog for ages. And I mean ages. But I didn’t, and here’s why: I was embarrassed, I thought people would take the mick (and some people do, but who cares?!), I didn’t know where to start, I didn’t know what to write about, I didn’t think people would read it... Then I came across CHRWRD. I had met Charlie briefly during my time at South Essex College, and therefore followed her on Instagram. I saw her mention her blog and thought ‘she blogs?!’ so I headed straight on over to take a look. I was amazed and spent ages looking through her past posts, admiring her layout and staring at her beautifully shot images. Then I thought, hang on a minute… if somebody I know is blogging and I think it’s pretty darn cool, why the hell am I afraid to blog myself?!

I headed to Blogger, since I now knew two people who powered their blogs with it (check out Pronounced Ren-A too!). Setting up my blog was so fast and easy, and I couldn’t wait to get started. I spent a bit of time on Google checking out free templates and found the theme ‘Winter’ (click here), which was actually very similar to my current layout. I had had some previous experience using HTML, so adjusting my template to suit me was easy, and my blog was up and running in no time!

Choosing what to write about wasn’t really hard once I sat down and thought about it. I spent hours watching makeup tutorials, searching for dupes, making wishlists and reading beauty columns, and I certainly spend enough dollar on beauty products, so why not review them?! I always read countless reviews before purchasing a product, so this seemed perfect for me. I love writing, I always have, and this is the main reason I had always wanted to blog. I always imagined studying English at uni, but it was just never meant to be, and here I am… a third year law student. It’s a tough subject which is very academic and structured, and to be honest, blogging has become my escape and a much-needed creative outlet!

My favourite posts to write aren’t about makeup at all. In my opinion, the best post I have ever written was this one here, all about plus-size modelling and the modelling industry (which has since featured on the OSI Blog). I love sharing my opinion in general, but especially on issues which affect us all in some way; I guess that’s why I’m so suited to my degree?

I hate to admit that I do care way too much about what other people think, and that’s a flaw in my personality. Why should we care about what anybody else thinks?! Do what makes you happy! Some people really don’t understand blogging in general, some people find it nerdy, some people find it incredibly narcissistic. That’s okay, that’s just their opinion. Other people don’t get the beauty part of my blog. They don’t get why I have so much to say on… makeup. Make up. And that’s okay too, it’s just not their bag. I write about makeup because I like makeup, simple. It’s something I would want to read about (and do!) and it’s, quite frankly, easy to write about and content comes easily with new purchases and trends.

What if nobody reads my blog?! Oh well! I blog for me, and I am so glad I started. When I was younger, all I wanted to do was write. When I was five, I used to tell people I wanted to be an author. When I was sixteen, I used to dream of writing beauty columns for my favourite magazines. I never explored either of these career paths because I was constantly told how ‘academic’ and ‘bright’ I was, and I was fortunate enough to have earned grades which enabled me to study a subject like law to degree level.

My blog may not be listed in any ‘top ten’ lists, it’s certainly never even been nominated for an award, and my Bloglovin’ follower count isn’t jaw-dropping. But I love what I am doing, and I won’t stop for anybody.

I would love to hear your thoughts on my reasons for blogging. What made you want to blog? Do you care about your follow count?

  7. I totally get this. I haven't showed my family my blog tbh, and I do get a little embarrassed. I would obviously like more people to read my blog but I don't really mind - I'm happy just to write to myself even if nobody bothers to read! What a lovely post though. I think your page (and you are) gorgeous xx

  8. First let me say, you look absolute stunning in that pic. Wow, girl you are pretty. Second, I love your post and reasons why you started blogging. Pretty much the same here, I do it for me. When I started the blog I was thinking like, let's see what will become of it, where it will take me. Well now I know, lol. It's hard work, that's what I learned along the way, wouldn't have thought so at the beginning, but I still love it and as long as I love it, I will blog. Easy as that. It's just for fun.

  12. Thank you for being so transparent with this post, people are definitely noticing you and definitely reading! However, these fears are ones that I can definitely relate to. Though like you, in time I realized how irrational they all were and just went for it. I love that your favorite post is about plus size modeling, I think the best posts that most people do are about real things that most people are afraid to talk about. Be you. Be different. It's totally working for you.

  13. Can so relate to this. It took me ages to start up my blog. It's odd because people assume that if you put yourself out there on the world wide web you must have a ton of confidence but I find it's quite the reverse. I often lack in confidence and get disheartened very quickly, am a massive over thinker and worry about what people think. It's all about stepping out of your comfort zone and the good thing is that the blogging community is so friendly and we all seem to be in the same boat! x

    1. Thank you so much for your kind words, glad you can relate! I totally agree. If people realised how much guts, ambition and hard work go into uploading and running a blog, they would see how scary it can be. I'm not the most confident person either, and do get disheartened if a post I put my heart and soul into doesn't receive much attention. Luckily, everybody is so friendly and welcoming around here, it definitely makes it easier. I have just checked out your blog, commented and followed!xx

  25. Great post and wonderful reasons! I think for me, as a travel blogger, both traveling and my passion for writing are what got me into blogging. At first I wanted to do it to keep family & friends updated but then I started noticing a ton of friends had travel related questions and I thought, why not make a thing out of it!

I am definitely not 100% focussed on my follower count but I'd be lying if it didn't matter. I eventually want to see where blogging can get me. But my passion for both writing & traveling is enough to keep me going right now :)

  29. This was such a lovely post to read Laura! I'd been meaning to start a blog for years but only got round to it last year, and I always thought it would be fashion based. But I really got in to writing beauty posts for my uni's paper and realised I was better off at that then posing awkwardly for an outfit post! I love having blogging as a release from work, glad to hear you do too :) x

  31. A very interesting post. I believe that if you always wanted to be a writer, blogging is surely a good way to start practicing. You may be surprised that it can also teach you to be tougher when it goes about what other people think. And come on, if what you know where is that "block" button is, don't you?! Everything is going to be fine if you do your best! And there is nothing wrong to write posts about makeup and beauty. I wonder if those people who roll their eyes, making you feel as if you are the most superficial person on the planet just because you are interested in beauty, would go to a celebrity makeup artist or to a professional Beauty Therapist and say to their face "You know, your kind of work is bullshit!" I'm sure they wouldn't even dare :))) Oh, don't pay attention on such people at all, it's not worth it. Just do what you love, sweetheart! xx

  34. BABE! I can't believe I only just bloody see this!! You are the cutest. I hid my blog from everyone for so long because I was too embarrassed of what people would think, I didn't even tell my best friend about it until a few months ago! Some people just don't get blogging and youtube so think you're a bit weird when you say "I write articles about makeup and things I want to buy" *lols*. But the blogging community, and espesh people like you, are SO supportive and encouraging and fuck it.. I write because I LOVE to write, to share my thoughts and opinions on things. And with blogging, there are no rules. You can post whatever the hell you want, and instantly it's out there - that's what I love about blogging, it's immediacy. I'm so happy that I gave you that little push to finally get writing, I love your blog and love that I actually know a fellow blogger in real life (haha), your posts are always so honest and interesting.. Love you girl! Fuck what people think, continue to write and share it with the world. Life is far too short to not do things because of what other people might think! Xxx
