Is It Magic? Or Just Another Foundation?

In case you didn't already know, foundation is my thing. The search for perfect base products never ceases for me, and I am definitely willing to splash the cash when it comes to my foundation. I was therefore fairly excited in the build up to the release of Charlotte Tilbury's Magic Foundation, which was released in September of this year. This foundation has been five years in the making, and has been back and forth from the labs during that time, until Charlotte considered it to be 'perfect.' On the 8th September (I meant to upload this post way sooner, apologies!), I grabbed my coat and my best friend and made a mad dash for Selfridges to purchase it.

The Price
Magic Foundation retails at £29.50 and is available to purchase from www.charlottetilbury.com, Net-a-Porter, Selfridges and Harrods.

The Packaging
I love the packaging of this product. The box is really girly, but sturdy and not at all tacky. The bottle itself is beautiful, too. It features a lovely rose gold lid, which makes it perfect for display. The frosted glass gives it a 'premium' feel. However, for the price, I would expect nothing less!

The Claims
According to Charlotte Tilbury herself, Magic Foundation is:
'a full coverage, demi-matte, long-lasting foundation, enriched with hyaluronic acid, laricyl and the concentrated power of vitam C. Skin is moisturised, dewy and pores are minimised.'
The foundation contains SPF15 and is intended to give a 'flawless, poreless, youthful' look.
The Truth
This is not a full coverage foundation! I would consider it to provide medium coverage at most; however, it is buildable. To me, this is a 'your skin, but better' foundation, which is fine for a lot of people, but not for me. It covers redness and blurs fine lines well, but you can still see spots and freckles through the foundation.

This foundation does provide a demi-matte finish, and does slightly minimise the appearance of pores. I'm still not too impressed though...

I was colour-matched in Selfridges, where they told me I was a shade '2,' and I agreed. However, this foundation does darken when it oxidises, so I would recommend going one shade lighter than you initially think. It's also a bit annoying how some shades come in halves, e.g. 3.5 and 4.5, but others don't.

I wouldn't say that this foundation is 'long-lasting' at all. For a high-end foundation, I was actually disappointed with the longevity. The product tends to do a disappearing act half way through my working day, which is frustrating!

Should You Buy It?
Short answer? No. Save your pennies. There are other high-end foundations which are well worth the dollar. This, however, isn't one of them.

  2. What a shame! If this foundation really did live up to its claims then I think it'd be one of the best foundations on the market x

  3. Completely agree with you! It definitely is not a magic foundation. I've had so many better foundations that do what they say for a fraction of the price. Loved reading this as bloggers too often sugar coat their reviews. You're a breath of fresh air!

  4. I love foundations that still look like skin. Sounds like this would be perfect for me in terms of finish and coverage. Shame it's not long lasting, though. For the price you pay, that's a deal breaker. x

    1. I would love foundations with a more natural finish if my skin was better! Unfortunately, at this stage in my life, I have very blemish prone skin. I know this is partially owing to my student diet (oops!). Right now, I'm a full coverage girl, through and through. I agree, the fact it does a disappearing act is a deal breaker for anyone!x

  5. I'm glad I'm not the only one that didn't like this foundation. Luckily for me I got a sample first, but I just hated the way it sat on my skin & looked throughout the day x

  6. I've heard such mix reviews of this foundation, but judging by your review its not really a foundation that I think I'd like, or that my skin would work with very well. Thanks for this review!

    1. My advice would be to start with something lighter like a CC cream. Then try some drugstore foundations and discover which formulas work best for your skin, before investing in high-end!

    1. If you don't normally wear foundation, this may work better for you, as its not a heavy formula and you wouldn't notice as much when it wears throughout the day. I think it's too expensive for what it is though!xx

  19. what a shame! I do love the fact that it's not a full coverage but not lasting all day when you've paid £29 is no good. love the packaging though ! thanks for sharing x

    1. I think the good reviews are probably coming from girls who prefer a more natural finish, whereas the bad reviews are coming from the girls who love full coverage. It's just personal opinion at the end of the day and also depends on your skin type, but I definitely wouldn't recommend to invest in this over other high-end foundations!
