An Introduction to Microdermabrasian With PMD*

Hello! Today I will be talking about the benefits of microdermabrasian and how you can achieve professional results from the comfort of your own home! Don't know what microdermabrasian is? Worry not! Nor did I until PMD got in touch, asking if I'd like to try their personal microderm system...
What Is Microdermabrasian?
Microdermabrasian is a dermatological treatment widely practiced in spas, whereby the stratum corneum (top layer of skin) is broken down to remove dead skin cells. The body interprets this as a mild injury and rushes to replace the lost cells with healthy ones. Microderm systems use flat, course disks made up of aluminium oxide crystals which deeply exfoliate the skin. Dead skin cells are instantly removed by the vacuum action of the devices, which activates the innate skin healing mechanism that stimulates cell renewal and collagen production in the first layers of the skin.

What's In The Box?
7x Exfoliating disks (2 green, 4 blue, 1 white training disk)
1 x Electrical cord
2 x Caps (1 large, 1 small)
1 x Reusable filter
Instructional DVD
Instructional pamphlet

When I opened the box, I was really impressed to find that not only were there introductory documents and instructions galore, but there was also an instruction DVD! I simply played the DVD on my laptop; it's not too long and not at all boring.

How to Use

  1. Watch the instructional DVD first! It will tell you what to do, and what not to do, wayyyy better than I ever could! Always read the instructions!
  2. Cleanse your face thoroughly and towel dry.
  3. The training disk comes pre-inserted. Always start with the training disk; it is the least coarse disk in the kit and will allow your skin to get used to the process. Make sure the cap is screwed on as tight as possible to ensure for maximum suction.
  4. Plug the device into a power outlet, and plug the other end of the power cord into the bottom of the device; make sure you twist it so it is locked into position. You're now ready to go!
  5. Use the on/off switch on the side of the device to power on. Test the device on the back of your arm/under your jaw to get a feel for it before you begin.
  6. When you are ready, use your free hand to pull the skin on your face tight, and then, once you have gained suction with the device, drag it along your skin in upward motions. Never go over the same part of your face with the device more than twice in one treatment and never hover in one place!
  7. Once you have finished using the device, switch it off, and finish by toning and moisturising your face.
  8. Repeat the treatment weekly, gradually moving on from the training disk to a more coarse disk.
Each disk should last between two and four treatments.

Benefits of Microdermabrasian
Using the device on a regular basis will reduce the appearance of fine lines, light scarring and wrinkles, improve the overall skin tone by fading uneven pigmentation, sun damage, age spots and skin blemishes, reduce the formation of acne and clear out clogged pores. In addition to this, your skincare products are likely to be up to 20% more effective when used in conjunction with microdermabrasian, as the top layer of the skin is removed, making it easier for the products to permeate and be absorbed by the skin.

Price and Where to Buy
The PMD can be purchased directly from www.personalmicroderm.co.uk, or alternatively from www.currentbody.com or Harrods. The device retails at £150.

The Verdict
I can definitely see the benefits of using a personal microdermabrasian device! My skin looks brighter and more even and my makeup applies a lot better now that the dead skin cells have been removed. I would definitely say that this device is good value for money. A one off payment of £150 enables you to perform the treatment in the comfort of your own home, as frequently as you like, rather than shelling out on constant appointments with your local spa/dermatology office!

Have you ever had microdermabrasian treatments? What do you think of them? Would you be willing to purchase your own DIY device? Let me know your thoughts in the comments section below!

  1. Wow, I've never tried Microdemabrasian before but this sounds amazing! I love rough exfoliators on my skin because I can see a difference instantly. I'd love to give this a try!

    1. You can feel a difference almost instantly after using this device! I'm not usually a fan of rough liquid exfoliators because they irritate my face, but this method doesn't cause much irritation (maybe a little redness, but it goes down pretty quick!) x

  2. I've never tried anything like this from home but have seen it offered in salons before! Would be interesting to see if it would do anything for acne scaring on my forehead!

  3. I have had microdermabrasion at a spa, but never at home. I´d fear that I´d damage my skin if I do something wrong...

    1. I've never had this treatment at a spa, else I'd have written a little comparison paragraph. It's quite a fool-proof device I believe, unless you ignore all the warnings and instructions, ha! My mum tried it and left it hovering on one part of her face (despite me telling her the instructions specifically say not to do that!) and she got a little scab in the area, but that's all.

  4. ive done this in a spa before but never at home. the price at first is a bit much but if you think about it, it actually works out a lot cheaper than visiting the salon! great product :D

    1. Yes I definitely agree, the price tag looks a little scary at first, but is far cheaper than constantly paying out for the same treatment at a spa!

  6. This product sounds really interesting - I once got a microdermabrasian facial and really liked it - or at least felt like it was working to buff away fine lines! I do not know if I would trust myself with a personal microdermabrasian device as I would be afraid I would do more damage than good to my skin.

    1. It's virtually fool-proof! I was a little nervous at first, but the training disk is absolutely fine once you've tested it out in an inconspicuous area. I don't use it as often as I should, I'm totally slacking when it comes to skincare right now... oops!

  10. I have seen a lot of similar device but am really worried about doing it myself at home. I wouldn't mind going to a spa and get it professionally done but I guess I'm really afraid of ruining my skin.

    1. Seems like that's a worry quite a few people are having, but the only way you can 'ruin' your skin with this device is if you completely disregard the instructions by hovering the device in one place or by using it too frequently. Other than that, it's pretty fool-proof if I'm honest! I guess it's just not for everyone haha

    1. Oh no, that's such a shame! I tried to take before and after photos, but because I didn't have many visual defects in my skin beforehand (e.g scarring, pigmentation issues etc), they didn't look too dissimilar! The difference is mainly in how my skin feels, though visually, it does look more radiant. My skincare products are absorbing a lot better and therefore are more effective and my makeup applies better if I keep up using this device, since all the dead skin is lifted.

I can definitely see why this would sound like a scary option on a services menu haha, I'm glad I got to try it this way before having it done professionally, as it's put me at ease! I don't even know if I'd pay to have it done professionally now anyway, this DIY device is so good, think I'll save my pennies!
