The Week in Words #1

Perhaps I should start with a brief intro here, seeing as you don't normally hear from me on a Sunday? Perhaps. Well, when I started this blog, I immediately labelled it as a 'beauty and lifestyle' blog, without much thought into how I would tailor my content to live up to that label. I just went with the flow and got caught up in a whirlwind of foundation reviews and chit-chat. Well, I guess what I'm trying to say here is that I've had a think, and I've decided that a weekly round-up could well be the solution. Keeping a journal is supposedly very therapeutic, so I'm hoping that this little series will be beneficial in more ways than one! I'm fully aware that these posts may not be as popular as my Tuesday posts (which are almost always beauty related), but these Sunday posts are more for me than for anyone else (how selfish of me, ha). I'm not promising a post every Sunday, just when I feel like I have something to say.

This week was pretty sucky, I'll be honest. I've been hit with a bout of the flu, and I can't say I've enjoyed it! I'm one of those annoying people who never gets ill, like, seriously... never. I think the last time I threw up was in 2003. I'm not even kidding you. As for the last time I was ill? I think that was in 2013. I had pharyngitis over the summer and it was the first time I've ever had to take sick leave off work. It was horrible. Well, this flu was almost on par with that. Thankfully, it was a lot less short lived (one week, rather than three).

You'd think the fact that I'm never ill would mean people are wayyy more concerned when I really am, because I don't make a habit of exaggerating/feigning illnesses. Do you know what a couple of people said to me when I told them I had the flu? They said 'do you mean you have a cold?' Really now?! Come on *inserts eye rolling emoji.* Guess what you bloody cynics? I checked ye' olde faithful, the NHS website, and according to the experts, the main differences between a cold and the flu are that the flu hits you very suddenly and prevents you from continuing with your everyday activities, whereas a cold develops gradually, only lasts a couple of days and doesn't stop you from going about your day.

I had to take two days off of uni and one day off work. For four full days I stayed in my pyjamas, clinging to my pillow. I'd like to personally thank the creators of 4Head, Lockets, Buttercup, Nurofen and Ragdale Hall Spa Lavender Pillow Spray. You guys da best. This little combo of products saw me through sleepless nights and made me as comfy as possible. I still ached all over and couldn't stand for more than twenty minutes, but at least my symptoms were muted slightly. Blah, blah, blah... I know, this may all seem a little dramatic, but let me get this straight: I know the flu is not the end of the world and that there are much worse illnesses out there. Just saying. Okay?  Well anyway, I'm feeling a little better now.

Ooh, I also got my first DSLR this week, guys! I went for the Nikon D3300 after deliberating for what felt like a bloomin' lifetime. My boyf wasn't too keen on me spending so much money in the six-month build up to us moving out, but I knew that if I didn't do it now, I never would, as I'd be forced into spending all my income on bills and appliances etc. I also had a lovely PR package delivered from Myriad Public Relations (who handle the PR for Tena) as a little 'thank you!' for writing about my experience with bladder weakness via a guest post for London Beauty Queen. Seeing my post go live on Hayley's blog was such a proud moment for me as a blogger, since she is one of my favourites and such a well-established blogger. If you fancy giving my post a read, click here.

This week my sister-in-law (kinda) and her husband finally announced that they're expecting on Facebook. I've known since she was eight weeks pregnant, but obvs had to keep it hush-hush. I was a little excited to see them announce it for everyone to see, as it meant I could finally share the scan via Instagram (what a time to be alive, aye?) and get excited about becoming an auntie for the first time. I know I won't be blood-related, but it's exciting, nonetheless.

What else? Hmmm...

I'm a little pissed about the disappearance of BBC Three from our screens, ngl. I used to put my TV on timer and fall asleep to either Family Guy or American Dad every single night. That's no longer a possibility, *sobs.*  So, right now I'm watching Friends With Benefits (you know the one, starring Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake?), but all I can hear is Meg Griffin (soz, Mila).

So, yeah... that's my week in words. Not the best week, but also not the worst. I'm looking forward to feeling healthy again and getting back to work and uni. For now, I'm going to finish watching this film (or maybe I'll stick to old habits and put my TV on timer), so cya!

    1. Great minds! I have Fox on Sky+ in the living room, but not in my bedroom! I know, it's horrid! I came into work yesterday when I should really have stayed in bed, and now I only feel worse for it. Aw, glad to hear it! Can't wait to take mine away with me to Amsterdam x

  2. I love watching American Dad! And just like you I started a beauty blog but I quickly realised it wasn't for me and turned my blog into a lifestyle blog. I personally love reading chatty Sunday posts, it's interesting to see what people have been up to and it really is a bit like reading a diary. I'm glad you're feeling better, having the flu is definitely a lot worse than having a cold. xx

    1. I love writing about beauty, but just want a little bit more out of my blog! Glad to hear that you like these types of posts; unfortunately, I've found from experience that they're just not very popular. I've no idea why, as I'm super nosy and love reading about other people's lives! Thank you so much! It's definitely a lot worse xx

  3. I've had the flu the past few weeks too. Self diagnosed by the NHS website of course. It was one of my worst bugs ever so I totally feel for you. I hope you're feeling better. And wahoo for the camera, are you enjoying it? I missed your post on Haleys blog but I'll definitely have to check it out, congrats!

    1. Thank you, Sophie! I thought I was feeling better, but got sent home from work again today. I have a day off tomorrow, so going to have another pyjama day and just take it easy. Hope you're feeling better! Loving the camera so far, but definitely think a second lens could be beneficial for achieving a more shallow depth of field. Thanks so much :)

    1. Glad you like the idea! Feel like I need to inject some 'me' into my blog. Writing about lipstick and mascara is fun and all, but it's not very... real? If you get what I mean! Go for it! I'd love to read more personal posts, they're much more relatable :)

    1. I don't really understand why they've axed such a fabulous channel when BBC Two and BBC Four are both still on air and they're terrible channels!

  7. Missing BBC 3 already! Would have made more sense to get rid of bbc4.

Hope your feeling better now anyway? Having the flu sucks!

  8. I hope you're feeling better now! Best way of feeling better asap is staying in the bed a whole day! Such an informative post on LBQ's blog, I didn't know most of these things, shame on me! We all need to treat ourselves once in awhile so getting a dslr was a great treat, I'm still trying to learn how to use mine properly :) (I have d3200). I'd also prefer watching Meg instead of Mila!Hope this week will be a better one for you!

  12. Real flu is just the worst - I ended up in hospital with flu a few years ago. It's so annoying when people have a sniffle & say it's the flu & then when you have the actual flu, they say you have a cold!!

    Loved this post! xx

    1. Thank God you agree! The difference between a cold and the flu is so obvious, I think it's just a lack of empathy when people downplay others' illnesses. I couldn't leave my bed for four days straight and even after that I couldn't do much at any one time due to a lack of energy. Today is the first day in eight days where I have felt 'normal' again and my symptoms are now just down to a tickly cough. Thank you so much, glad to hear that you enjoyed the post :)xx
