UD All Nighter Foundation Review: Shade 0.5 Swatches

Ooh, I'm so excited about this one! I wouldn't say I'm a huge Urban Decay fan, to be honest, but when I heard that this was being released, I was indescribably excited. When it comes to base products, I've always sung UD's praises. Their Naked Weightless concealer is a cult product, with good reason. It's my holy grail full coverage concealer, and don't get me started on their setting sprays! So I knew I just had to have their new All Nighter Foundation in my collection.

Luckily, I know an Urban Decay makeup artist who works in my local Debenhams, so I asked her to let me know when they were in stock so I could pop in for a cheeky colour-match on my lunch break one day. As I do before buying any foundation, I spent the morning reading reviews and looking at swatches and YouTube videos. These all lead me to believe that I would be the lightest shade in the range *sobs,* and I was right.

What UD say...

"It’s the ultimate foundation for a flawless-looking complexion that won’t quit.

All Nighter Liquid Foundation provides full coverage with a modern matte finish that never looks overdone. Get serious long-lasting wear and a blown-out effect you never thought was possible. Perfect for all-night affairs and other scandalous activities, our revolutionary formula is also comfortable enough to wear every day.

While Naked Skin complexion products are demi-matte, All Nighter Liquid Foundation is completely matte—but never flat (and it’s oil-free!). We loaded this formula with an insane amount of pigment (about three times as much as Naked Skin Liquid Makeup), so a little goes a long way. There’s no need to build coverage or apply multiple layers. This waterproof, paraben-free formula diffuses light to blur flaws for beautifully perfected skin as it mattifies and absorbs oil to reduce the appearance of shine.

With a wide range of meticulously calibrated shades that align with our existing Naked Skin Liquid Makeup shades, it’s easy to find your perfect match.

All Nighter Liquid Foundation comes in a sleek, edgy bottle that has a luxurious, highly metallized gunmetal effect with asymmetric cutouts. As cool as it looks, it’s also practical; the shade is clearly visible, but the bottle never looks messy. It’s also equipped with an airless pump—so it’s easy to get out every last bit of product."

What I say...

First up, I have to say that I'm not a fan of the packaging. It sits perfectly in line with Urban Decay's theme of laser cut products, and it's definitely 'edgy' which is part of the brand's well-recognised persona. I never really admire UD's packaging, as it just doesn't feel 'high-end' enough for me. I guess that is just personal preference though, and in no way affects the performance of the foundation itself.

This foundation is most definitely worth the £27 price tag! I've been absolutely blown away by this miracle foundation in a bottle. There is no area in which it disappoints me.

The coverage is very full - think Estee Lauder Double Wear or a thick layer of Revlon's Color Stay foundation. This foundation has a handy pump dispenser, so you won't get mucky and can dispense the perfect amount of product. One pump of this foundation is enough to provide a full coverage look, since it is so pigmented; it is buildable though, for those areas where you need a little bit of extra help. There is no need to wear concealer with this foundation; that's how well this covers imperfections and dark under-eye circles. There is also no need to wear setting spray, because this lasts and lasts. However, you may wish to go ahead and finish with the All Nighter setting spray (a holy grail product of mine) to keep your other base products, like bronzer and blusher, in check.

This foundation has a really thick consistency and does have quite a bit of a 'foundation' smell to it. As a full coverage foundation lover, neither of these things bother me. I find this comfortable to wear all day, and it definitely doesn't feel 'cakey.' I would say that if you hate that 'mask like' feeling, then this probably isn't for you, as you can feel it and smell it.

This is a little tricky to apply; you have to really work quickly, as it sets quite fast. I've found that this applies best with a buffing brush, rather than a beauty blender. I'm particularly liking applying it with the Urban Decay Optical Blurring brush (F105), which applies my foundation evenly and is really soft on the skin. The finish is matte as matte can be, yet it doesn't look flat on the skin. It goes on as a liquid, but when dry, it has an almost powdery finish to it. It does transfer a little bit, when you touch your face, but not massively. I can't vouch for this being waterproof, as the lovely weather we've been experiencing here in Essex in the UK has meant it hasn't yet faced the merciless British rains. I'm willing to bet that this would put up a good fight in a downpour, though, since its stamina is truly unbeatable. You don't even need a primer with this one, girls... it won't budge, so there's no need to worry!

I have combination skin, and this foundation works so well with my skin. It controls the oily parts of my face (like my nose) brilliantly, and doesn't break up as the day goes on. I would advise those with dry skin to give this one a miss. This foundation can cling to dead skin and emphasise dry patches. For me, this isn't a problem; if I do have dry patches, I just ensure I thoroughly exfoliate and moisturise before applying it.

Urban Decay claim that there is a 'wide' range of 'meticulously calibrated' shades in this range. I'd probably err on the side of saying there are more light shades suitable for those with pink undertones than yellow undertones. I'd also say that those who have real difficulty finding a foundation to match their skin tone perfectly might be better off looking at a range like the Makeup Forever Ultra HD foundation, since it has a whopping 42 shades. I was matched as the lightest shade in the range - 0.5. I'd say this is a shade for fair-light skin tones with neutral undertones. Shade wise, I'd compare this to MAC's NC15 (studio fix fluid), Makeup Forever's Alabaster (Ultra HD) and Estee Lauder's Shell (Double Wear). It isn't at all orange and also isn't too pink for me. I'd say this is actually a perfect match for my skin. This shade is virtually the same colour as the Urban Decay Naked Weightless concealer in shade 'fair/neutral.' I've swatched them both together (below), so you can see how similar they are.

I would definitely advise getting colour-matched in store for this foundation, rather than buying online. This foundation oxidises 1 shade darker than it applies. It doesn't take long at all to notice the formula has darkened on your skin! The UD makeup artist told me she has found this on everyone she has applied it to, so far. If you really want to take a gamble, go for a shade lighter than you think you should!

Left/Bottom: UD All Nighter Foundation in '0.5.' Right/Top: UD Naked Weightless concealer in 'fair/neutral.'
So there are my thoughts on this new foundation from Urban Decay. I honestly cannot fault it; it's just perfect for my fair/light combination skin. I'd go as far as giving this product 5 stars, but I can't wait to carry on using it over the coming months, to see how it fares during the Autumn and Winter months. Have you tried this foundation yet? How about other UD base products? I'd love to hear your thoughts below!

    1. Glad you agree! It just doesn't quite have that 'luxe' feel to it, which is disappointing. Ooh, let me know how you get on if you buy this one!

    1. I prefer high end foundations as they feel more like a treat! Also, I've found they tend to deliver more and there are way more full coverage options on the high end market. Aw, thank you! That means a lot xx

  11. Oh no what a shame that it oxidises as I would love to try it, but I'm not sure it'll match me! xx

    1. If you are paler than NC15 in MAC, then I don't think the current range will provide for you. Always worth popping in to check though :)
