My MAC Lipstick Collection & Swatches and Why I won't be Buying MAC Lipsticks Again

I've been putting off writing this post for a while for two reasons. Firstly, MAC lipsticks are so damn hard to photograph! The shimmery bullets just look awful every time I edit them, as bringing out the contrast makes the silver look white-ish and unnatural. Ugh. #bloggerproblems. Secondly, I was worried that this would come across as really negative and be a bit like brand-bashing. I'd like to reassure you that that definitely isn't the case! I think MAC is a great brand. Besides, they're such a huge brand, that my opinion means diddly-squat anyways.

The first MAC lipstick I ever owned was Velvet Teddy. I only bought it because of the hype surrounding it and, because it was so very rarely in stock, I thought I should grab my chance. A theme was set after my first purchase - I only ever went running to MAC because it was the done thing. It seemed like collecting MAC lipsticks was the only way to go; the bullets look pretty on your dressing table, there is a huge selection of shades and (the matte ones at least) have amazing staying power. Lately though, I've been doing the math, and the logic behind MAC lipstick purchases just doesn't add up.

I own eight lipsticks. They retail at £15.50 each. That's £124! Plus, with MAC lipsticks, I always feel the need to buy the matching lip liners, which cost £13. Let's say I had the MAC liner for each of my eight lipsticks, that'd be £104. Plus the £124, and that totals £228 on lip products. To me that is insanity.

By comparison, Colourpop Ultra Matte Lip liquid lipsticks retail at $6 each (£4.84 at the time of writing). You don't need lip liner with liquid lipsticks, because they're usually so pigmented and the doe foot applicators allow you to line with precision. So, let's take that total of £228, which could buy you eight MAC lip pencils and eight MAC lipsticks. It could also get you... drum roll pleaseeee.... fourty-seven Colourpop Ultra Matte Lip liquid lipsticks! Now I don't know about you, but I would much rather own fourty-seven Colourpop lipsticks than eight MAC lipsticks! I find Colourpop to be extremely high quality for the price and therefore great value for money.

The above was just an example. While I love Colourpop lipsticks, the shade range isn't that broad. There are several other lipstick brands which do the job for less than half the price though. NYX Liquid Suede lipsticks are also fab and have more bold and brave offerings. They retail in Boots for £6.50, which means for that same £228, you could buy thirty-five tubes of Liquid Suede!

It's not all about scrimping and saving; sometimes you want to splurge a little. Luxury high-end lipsticks are a real treat and I definitely understand the lure of them. I honestly believe that for the same price as MAC, you can get better products. Jeffree Star Velour liquid lipsticks and Stila Stay All Day liquid lipsticks both offer better staying power, nicer shades which are more true to their online swatches, higher pigmentation and beautiful packaging and they both retail for £16 on Beauty Bay.

MAC has definitely become synonymous with high-quality. MAC lipsticks are definitely the cream of the crop when it comes to traditional lipsticks, but for me, they've been outdone by all the amazing new liquid lipstick offerings on the market. I'll no longer be splashing the cash on MAC lipsticks, as I just don't feel it's worth it. I'm trying to cut back on spending so much on makeup in general. That £228 could've paid half my annual car insurance, almost six full tanks of petrol, three quarters of the holiday I just went on, a new lens for my camera or three new winter coats! That's just crazy and makes me feel a little ill (and more than a little guilty).

While I won't be actively buying anymore MAC lipsticks, I definitely wouldn't turn my nose up at them if someone were to gift me one! I'll also still be investing in other MAC products. I'll always love their primers and powders!

Below are some swatches of the MAC lipsticks I currently own. They're all matte, except for 'O' which is a frost finish. I would say that 'Sin' and 'Lust Extract' appear a little darker and more intense in real life than they do in the below image. Although this photo was taken in natural daylight and minimally edited, it still doesn't give the truest representation of the shades, so I'd recommend swatching in store before purchasing! Of them all, 'Sin' is my favourite. I pair it with 'Nightmoth' lip pencil for a really vampy look in the evenings!

  1. I like MAC lipsticks - well it depends on the formula, I guess!

It's funny - I'll easily drop £40 on an eyeshadow palette but hesitate when it comes to spending that on a top! Crazy really! xx

  2. I can definitely see your point, I feel like £15.50 doesn't seem like that much at the time, but if you have a few and you add up the cost it gets so expensive!

    1. It adds up so quickly, it's scary really! I'm not paying into it anymore. I'd rather spend my money homemaking and making memories xx

  3. I've never bought a MAC lipstick before, and I honestly think it's just the price tag that's putting me off - just can't part with that much money for makeup, yno! Not sure how they can justify that price either if I'm honest, when their makeup is from the same company as others. I'd love to try ColourPop though, I feel like I'm missing out there!

  4. I love all of my MAC lipsticks, but they're definitely only something I buy as an airport treat (the duty free price is a bit kinder!) or ask for from others as presents. I actually haven't tried any of the lipliners yet, which is probably a good thing!

    1. They are! They are amazing quality, so pigmented and matte, but I just can't justify spending so much on lipsticks now that I have bills to pay!
